ANN SHEFFIELD

FINE ART

OILS, WATERCOLORS, SKETCHES

The landscape is constantly changing—shaped by shifting light, weather, and season - and those transformations inspire every painting I create. Working in oil, graphite, ink, and watercolor, I paint the places that have become part of my life, from the rugged California coast to the expansive landscapes of Arizona.

I am drawn to moments that often pass unnoticed: the first light on the horizon, the stillness before a storm, the warmth of late afternoon, or the quiet colors of evening. My paintings are an invitation to slow down, reconnect with the natural world, and experience the quiet power and beauty of a moment before it passes.

About

About

Ann Sheffield

Growing up in London with creative and adventurous parents fostered an early curiosity about the world and a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Traveling widely with my family exposed me to an extraordinary variety of landscapes, light, weather, and place—experiences that continue to shape the way I see and paint. After completing my undergraduate and graduate training in the United States, I built a career as a set designer for the theater and as an educator of young designers. Years spent creating environments for the stage sharpened my sensitivity to composition, atmosphere, color, scale, and, above all, light. After relocating to the Santa Barbara coast, an unexpected pause during the pandemic gave me the opportunity to return seriously to painting in oils and watercolors. What began as a return to an earlier passion quickly became an essential part of my creative life. My paintings are rooted in the natural world and in the fleeting moments that transform it—the changing light, an approaching storm, the quiet of dawn, or the last illumination of dusk. I am drawn to those moments when a familiar landscape suddenly becomes extraordinary, and to the challenge of capturing something that is, by its nature, constantly changing. Through my work, I hope to convey not simply what a place looks like, but something of what it feels like to be there— to experience its atmosphere, its energy, and the sense of wonder that comes from looking closely at the world around us.
